How can I unmerge contacts or companies?

Sales: Free, Starter, Professional

It is not currently possible to automatically unmerge contacts and companies. However, you can free up the secondary email address or company domain name from the merge so that you can recreate the merged contact or company.

To unmerge two contacts:

  • Navigate to the contact record

    • In your HubSpot Marketing Basic, Professional, or Enterprise account, navigate to Contacts Contacts

    • In your HubSpot Marketing Free or Starter or Sales account, navigate to Contacts

  • Click on the name of the contact.

  • In the About section click View all properties and find the Email property.
  • Click the pencil icon to edit the Email property. Click the X for the value under Merged email address then click Save

  • Return to Contacts (click Contacts in the main nav or click Contacts Contacts). 
  • Click Add contact and create a new contact with the original secondary email address that was merged.

To unmerge two companies:

  • Navigate to the company record

    • In your HubSpot Marketing Basic, Professional, or Enterprise account, navigate to Contacts Companies

    • In your HubSpot Sales account, navigate to Companies
  • Click on the name of the company.

  • In the About section click View all properties and find the Company domain name property.
  • Click the pencil icon to edit the Company domain name property. Click the X for the value under Merged domain then click Save.

  • Return to Companies (click Companies in the main nav or click Contacts Companies). 
  • Click Add company and create a new company with the original company domain name that was merged.
