Is there a limit to the number of engagements I can add to a contact, company, or deal?

Yes. There is a limit of 10,000 engagements per each individual contact, company, or deal record. Engagements are tasks, calls, notes, emails, and meetings that get added to the record. Any engagements after the 10,000th will result in an error and will not be added.
