Why am I receiving form submission notification emails for blank contacts?

Last updated: December 13, 2016

All contacts in HubSpot must have an email address. If the link in a form submission notification email takes you to a contact record that does not have an email address, that contact has not actually been created in HubSpot.

You may still receive form submission notification emails when the form is submitted, even if no email address is included. This can occur if:

  • You are using a custom form with the Forms API and the form does not require an email address to submit and no cookie is passed - can happen when disable cookie tracking is set to "Yes"
  • Your HubSpot form does not include the default email field and no cookie is passed - can happen when disable cookie tracking is set to "Yes"
  • The email field on your HubSpot form is smart/not required and no cookie is passed - can happen when disable cookie tracking is set to "Yes"

We recommend making the default HubSpot Email field a required, non-smart field on all of your forms to ensure that contact information is always captured. No notification email will be sent from a form submission if a contact does not provide an email address to the default email field AND the contact has not been tracked by a HubSpot cookie.
