How does HubSpot track the analytic interactions of contacts created via APIs?

Last updated: December 13, 2016

In certain circumstances, APIs are used to pass contacts into one's HubSpot contacts database. When contacts are passed into HubSpot, the following is needed:

  • Email address so the actual contact gets created.
  • Cookie passed as the hutk (HubSpot user token) to the contact record - The only way to pass the hutk to HubSpot is via the Submit form data API.

The cookie is crucial as it links the contact's browsing activity to the contact record in HubSpot. Without it, HubSpot will not be able to effectively track the contact as it visits HubSpot pages or external pages that contain your HubSpot tracking code.
