How to add keywords to the Keywords tool

Now that you have brainstormed an initial list of keywords, it's time to add them to your Keywords tool so that you can track how your site ranks for that keyword, as well as that keyword's difficulty and search volume.  

It is important to keep in mind that the Keywords tool is purely a research tool that will help you develop a keywords strategy. Adding keywords to this tool does not affect your SEO. Using the Keywords tool to identify target keywords that you use throughout your content will help improve your SEO.  

Follow these steps to learn how to use the Keywords tool to add keywords and to get suggestions on keywords that you could add.

Go to the Keywords tool

From your HubSpot Dashboard, navigate to Reports > Keywords.

Click on the Add Keywords button

From the Keywords dashboard, click on the Add keywords button at the top-right.

Enter the list of keywords (one keyword per line)

Type in one keyword per line. If you still are not sure what keywords to enter, you can learn more about potential keywords to use in the HubSpot Academy Keywords video training.

Get Suggestions

If you'd like some help brainstorming more keywords based on your existing keywords, click the Get Suggestions button. If not, skip ahead to step 4.

You'll then see the Keyword Suggestions tool. You can enter a search term or URL and then click the Get Suggestions button to see a list of suggested keywords. Check the box next to the keywords you'd like to add to your tracked keywords list and then click on the Use Selected button.

You'll then see that those selected keywords have been added into the Add new keywords input. You can finish adding the keywords to your tool by choosing a HubSpot campaign and clicking the Add Keywords button.

Choose a campaign to associate those keywords with

Use the campaign drop-down menu to select the campaigns to associate with these new keywords. Campaigns allow you to group your keywords and associate them with your other marketing assets from that campaign. For example, if you are launching a new product, any keywords related to that launch should be tagged with that campaign's name. This allows you to not only filter those keywords by campaign, but also see those keywords as one of your marketing assets on that campaign's overview.  To learn more about HubSpot's Campaign's tool, check out the Campaigns User Guide.

For example, if your company has a product that targets the healthcare vertical, and another product that targets the education vertical, you'd set up a different campaign for each of those verticals.

Click the Add Keywords button

To finish adding the list of keywords to your account (along with any campaign), click on the Add Keywords button.

Adding keywords to your content

Once you've added Keywords to track, you will also want to ensure that some of the keywords from your list are added to your blog posts, page titles, image alt tags, and the body of your content. Remember, the Keywords tool helps you identify your various ranking opportunities, but the keywords need to exist in your content in order for your site to rank for them. In the next section of this guide, you will learn how to interpret the data displayed on the Keywords dashboard.
