Create a random sample from a list

Last updated: August 13, 2025

Available with any of the following subscriptions, except where noted:

Marketing Hub   Professional , Enterprise

To separate out a subset of records in a list, you can create a random sample. For example, you have a list of your long-term customers. You can take a random sample of the customers from which you'll request testimonials about their experience with your business. You can create a random sample list with a certain number of records or a percentage of the records in the list.

To create multiple lists with certain percentages of records in an existing list, you can split a list instead (Marketing Hub Enterprise only).

Permissions required Edit List permissions are required to create random sample lists.

  1. In your HubSpot account, navigate to CRM > Lists.
  2. Click the name of the list of which to create a sample.
  3. In the top right, click Actions, then select Create random sample.
  4. In the dialog box, enter the number of records or % of records you want in the random sample. The value that isn't filled in will auto-populate to show the count and percentage breakdown.
  5. Click Create list.
  6. A pop-up will appear to confirm a new static list was created with a sample of the list's records. To navigate to the new list, click the list name. To close the pop-up and return to the source list, click Got it.
To track how many random samples have been made from a list, you can review the source list's details. Learn more about editing or using lists.
