HubSpot's change sources

Last updated: August 25, 2026

Available with any of the following subscriptions, except where noted:

Within HubSpot, you can view a record's source to understand how a record was created or view a record's property history to see how its property values have been updated over time. The source values below show which tool, user, or process updated the record. For example, the record was created by an import or a record's property value was changed via a workflow.

The following sources apply to the Record Source property and property history information (i.e., the Source column). To understand how contacts have interacted with your online content, review traffic sources and the Original and Latest Traffic Source properties instead.

Please note: some sources below don't apply to the Record source property as certain tools cannot create records.

A record can be updated through the following sources:

  • Activities: a logged activity.
  • Ads: a manual update in the ads tool or through an ads background process.
  • Analytics: web analytics, visits, traffic information, or by an interaction with the HubSpot tracking code.
  • Approvals: the approvals system in response to user action or as part of internal backfill or cleanup.
  • BCC'd Email: an email with the HubSpot BCC address.
  • Batch Update: a batch API endpoint, or an internal batch migration.
  • Bot Chatflow: a chatbot.
  • Buyer-Intent: from the buyer intent tool.
  • CRM Setting: a HubSpot setting, for example the setting to automatically create and associate companies with contacts.
  • CRM UI: a manual action in HubSpot (e.g., manually create a contact). If a user makes the change, their profile name and email address will be listed.
  • CRM Bulk Action: a bulk action in HubSpot.
  • Custom Agent: by a custom agent (BETA). The agent’s name will appear as a link in the source. The source will also show who created the agent.

Please note: the custom agent change source is available only to accounts enrolled in the Meet Agent Builder: custom agents made for your business beta.
