To ensure phone numbers are formatted properly in your CRM, you can add validation rules to phone number properties. The formatting and country code validation rules are available for the default Phone number and Mobile phone number properties as well as custom properties with the Phone number field type.
Understand phone number validation
If you turn on phone number validation, the property value must match E.164 format. This means the phone number value must:
- Include a valid country code, starting with a plus sign (+).
- Match number formatting for the chosen country code.
- Include a valid area code or regional equivalent.
- Contain between 4 and 15 digits.
- Contain only numbers and a leading plus sign (+).
- Include extensions as ext [number] (e.g., +18884827768 ext 123).
For example, +1 (123) 456-7890 would be recognized as an invalid number given the above rules because 123 is not a valid area code in the US.
Validated phone numbers are saved without formatting, but are displayed in HubSpot in the regional format. For example, +1 (888) 482-7768 would be saved as +18884827768 but displayed as +1 (888) 482-7768. Once you apply the validation rule, users cannot remove phone number formatting when editing phone number property values.
Add phone number validations to a property
To add phone number validation to an existing or new property:
- In your HubSpot account, click the settings settings icon in the top navigation bar.
-
In the left sidebar menu, navigate to Properties.
-
Click the Select an object dropdown menu, then select [Object] properties to create or edit a property for that object.
- To add validation rules to an existing phone number property, click the property's name, then click the Rules tab in the right panel.
- To create a new phone number property with validation, click Create property.
- Enter the property's details, then click the Field type tab.
- For the field type, select Phone number, then click the Rules tab.
- Select the Validate phone numbers for this property checkbox.
- To set a default country code for the property, select a country code. If a value is missing a country code but is valid based on the other requirements, the selected country code is added automatically before the value is saved. You can still use different country codes in phone number property's values even if a default country code is selected.
Please note: the default country code currently only applies to phone number property updates made via import.

- Once you're done, click Create or Save.
