How to create smart content in a HubSpot email

You can also use smart content in any HubSpot email you create. Because of the nature of emails, you are limited in the amount of smart content you can create. For example, you'll be able to make the main email body smart based off of contact list membership or lifecycle stage, but not off of anonymous information because your email is being sent to a known contact.

Follow the steps below to learn how to create smart content in a HubSpot email.

Navigate to Email

From your HubSpot Dashboard, navigate to Content > Email.

Open an email

At this point you can either edit an existing email or create new email to insert your smart content. Click on the draft from the list or start a new email by clicking the blue button to create new email at the top-right.

Make smart

Locate your Main Email Body (rich text) module, hover over the module until you see your menu options and click the Make Smart module.

You will only be able to make rich text and Custom HTML modules smart modules when working in HubSpot emails.

Choose and create your type of smart content

You should have already decided the visitor you want to target, now you want to choose the type of smart content to use. You have two options in emails: contact list membership or lifecycle stage. You can only choose one type of smart content to create here. Choose one of the options then click Next step.

Once you’ve made your decisions on the type and chosen its criteria, click the blue button to move onto the Next step.

Customize your smart rule

This is where all your content creation for smart rules takes place. You’ll see the text area for the rule you created - this is where you’ll want to add in the text you’re writing for your new smart rule. Once you’re done writing this content, click Done.

That’s it! You’ve created smart content for your HubSpot email.
