CTA

Can a CTA be a mailto: or tel: link?

Last updated: October 4, 2018

Applies to:

Marketing Hub
marketing-basic-pro-enterprise
Basic, Professional, Enterprise

You can configure your CTA's link to open an email composer window (mailto: link) or to initiate a phone call (tel: link).

Create a mailto: link for your CTA

  • In your HubSpot account, navigate to Marketing > Lead Capture > CTAs.
  • Hover over an existing CTA and click Actions > Edit, or click Create CTA.
  • In the Simple CTA pane, click Next to jump to the second step, Options
  • From the URL redirect type dropdown menu, select External website URL.
  • In the Enter URL field, enter mailto:example@email.com (replace example@email.com with the email address for the To line in your contact's email program).
  • To add a CC or BCC, append ?cc=example@email.com or ?bcc=example@email.com.
  • To add a subject line, append the following to the email address: ?subject=Email%20Subject (e.g., mailto:example@email.com?subject=Email%20Subject ).
  • If you are appending more than one field to the mailto: link, the second field is introduced with an "&". For example, if you wish to create a mailto link that includes a CC address and a subject line, it will look like: mailto:recipient@domain.com?cc=other@domain.com&subject=Email%20Subject
  • A mailto: link that includes a subject and body text will look like: mailto:recipient@domain.com?subject=Email%20Subject&body=Body%20Text
  • Click Save when you're done.

Please note: there can't be any spaces in the mailto: link. You'll need to place %20 in place of each space.

Create a tel: link for your CTA

  • In your HubSpot account, navigate to Marketing > Lead Capture > CTAs.
  • Hover over an existing CTA and click Actions > Edit, or click Create CTA.
  • In theSimple CTA pane, click Next to jump to the second step, Options
  • From the URL redirect type dropdown menu, select External website URL
  • In the Enter URL field, enter tel:5555555555 (replace 5555555555 with the phone number). Read more about using a tel: link as a hyperlink on a page or as a custom button.
  • Click Save when you're done.
