Create and use segment properties

Available with any of the following subscriptions, except where noted:

On the segments index page, to filter your segments by property values and create saved views to revisit certain segments, create custom segment properties. For example, create a Segment purpose property to explain why the segment was created and how it should be used, such as for a marketing email or for tracking event attendees.

Custom segment property values are set either when you create a new segment or from the index page after a segment is processed. To set criteria for which records to include in a segment, create and use properties for the object instead (e.g., contact properties, deal properties).

Create segment properties

To create custom segment properties:

  1. In your HubSpot account, click the settings settings icon in the top navigation bar.
  2. In the left sidebar menu, navigate to Properties.
  3. Click the Select an object dropdown menu, then select Segment (List) properties.
  4. Click Create property.
  5. Set up your property, then click Create.

Add properties to the create segment form

To add your segment properties to the form shown when creating a new segment. For example, require users to set the Segment purpose and Creating team before being able to save a segment.

  1. In your HubSpot account, click the settings settings icon in the top navigation bar.
  2. In the left sidebar menu, navigate to Objects, then select Segments (Lists).
  3. Click Customize the 'Create segment (list)' form.
  4. In the left sidebar of the segment form editor, click Add properties.
  5. Select the checkbox next to the custom property. 
  6. You can also set up conditional logic, make properties required, or rearrange properties. Learn more about customizing the create form.
  7.  Click Save in the upper right.

With the property added to the segment create form, you can now access the property in the Custom properties section when creating a segment.

Update segment properties

You can update custom property values for existing segments from the index page.

  1. In your HubSpot account, navigate to CRM > Segments.
  2. Hover over a segment, then click Details.
  3. In the right panel, in the Custom properties section, update the property value.
  4. Click Save.

You can use custom properties when viewing and filtering your segments on the segments index page. Learn how to filter segments or create and manage segment views.

Show segment properties as columns

On the segments index page, you can display your custom properties as columns when viewing the segments table. For example, show the Segment purpose column so teams know which lists to use for their work.

  1. In your HubSpot account, navigate to CRM > Segments.
  2. In the top right above the table, click Actions, then select Edit columns.
  3. To add a property as a column, select the property's checkbox.
  4. To reorder the columns, use the drag handle to drag and drop properties.

  5. Click Apply.
