By default, the Contact owner and Company owner properties are independent and do not sync. This means a user who owns a company record may not own the associated contact records. If you want to keep the owners consistent between company and contact, turn on your sync ownership settings.
To sync ownership between contacts and companies:
- In your HubSpot account, click the settings settings icon in the main navigation bar.
-
In the left sidebar menu, navigate to Objects > Contacts.
-
In the Automation section, select the checkbox to Assign company owner to contact by default.

With this setting enabled:
- The Company owner property will update the Contact owner property of the contacts associated with the company.
- The Contact owner property will not overwrite the associated Company owner property unless the Company owner property is blank.
- If you would like to assign a contact to a different user than the company's owner, you can still manually assign a new contact owner. The Contact owner property will not revert back to the value in the associated Company owner property.
This setting does not update the owner or records retroactively and it does not affect any custom HubSpot user field type properties.
