Customize close date automation for objects

Last updated: October 21, 2025

Available with any of the following subscriptions, except where noted:

You can configure close date automation for deals, tickets, services, and projects. This allows you to automate a part of your pipeline process. It also helps ensure that close dates are consistent across your pipelines.

Please note: your account may use personalized names for each object (e.g., account instead of company). This document refers to objects by their HubSpot default names.

By default, the following behavior is expected prior to customization:

  • When you move a record to a closed stage, the Close date value will be updated to today's date.
  • When you move a record from a closed stage to an open stage, the previously set Close date value will remain.
  • When you change a deal stage probability in pipeline settings from any percentage (i.e. open) to Lost or Won or vice versa, the previously set Close date value will remain.
  • When you change a ticket status in pipeline settings from Open to Closed or vice versa, the previously set Close date value will remain.

Customize close date automation

Please note: merging a record will not trigger close date automations.

You can adjust these automation settings per pipeline to stop setting the close date, or to clear the close date when a record moves to an open stage.

To adjust the close date automation settings:

  1. In your HubSpot account, click the settings settings icon in the top navigation bar.
  2. In the left sidebar menu, navigate to your desired object:
    • In the left sidebar menu, navigate to Objects > Deals.
    • In the left sidebar menu, navigate to Objects > Projects.
    • In the left sidebar menu, navigate to Objects > Services.
    • In the left sidebar menu, navigate to Objects > Tickets.
  3. Click the Pipelines tab.
  4. Click the Select a pipeline dropdown menu, then select the pipeline you want to adjust.
  5. Click the Automate tab. If collapsed, click Templated automations to expand the section.
  6. To adjust the automation for when a record is moved to a closed stage, in the Set the close date to today when moving [object] to closed stage row:
    • To turn off the automation, toggle the switch off. With the setting turned off, a record's close date won't be updated when you move a record to a closed stage.
    • To turn the automation back on, toggle the switch on. With the setting turned on, a record's close date will be set to today's date when you move a record to a closed stage.
  7. To adjust the automation for when a record is moved from a closed stage to an open stage, in the Clear the close date when moving [object] from closed to open stage row:
    • To turn on the automation, toggle the switch on. With the setting turned on, a record's close date will be cleared when you move a record from closed to an open stage.
    • To turn the automation back off, toggle the switch off. With the setting turned off, a record's close date will remain as the previously set value when you move a record from closed to an open stage.

Please note: you can only adjust the Set the close date to today when moving ticket to closed status automation for tickets.
