Create associations between records based on an intermediary record. When a record is already associated to two other records that aren't connected to each other, you can use the Copy associations workflow action to associate these two other records. These records do not need to have a matching property, such as when using the Create associations action.
Understand the Copy associations action
The Copy associations action creates new associations, based on existing shared associations. For example, you have the following records:
- Deal A associated to Contact A.
- Deal A associated to a Company A.
- Contact A and Company A are not associated.
When using Deal A as an intermediary record in the action, Contact A and Company A will be associated.
When using this action, associations will be set up for all associated records. For example, you have the following records:

Deal A associated to Contact A, Contact B, and Contact C.
- Deal A associated to Company A and Company B.
- None of the contacts or companies are associated.
When using Deal A as an intermediary record in the action, the following associations will be created:

Company A will be associated with Contact A, Contact B, and Contact C.
- Company B will also be associated with Contact A, Contact B, and Contact C.
Use the Copy association action
- In your HubSpot account, click More, then navigate to Automation > Workflows. If More doesn't appear in your account, navigate to Automation > Workflows directly.
- Click the name of an existing workflow or create a new workflow.
- Set your enrollment triggers.
- Click the + plus icon to add an action.
- In the left panel, click to expand the CRM section. Then, click Copy associations.
- Configure your Copy associations action details:
- Intermediary record: the intermediary record, connecting the records to be associated. by default, this will be set to the [object] from trigger. You can also select other associated objects as the intermediary record, such as an associated contract.
- Associate these records: the first object type to be associated.
- With these records: the second object type to be associated.
- Label to apply: the association label to be appled to the newly associated records. By default, no association labels will be applied, and the field will be set to Default (no label). Learn more about association labels.
- After setting up your Copy associations action, at the top, click Save.
- Continue setting up your workflow.
