How can I manage the automatic syncing of lifecycle stages between associated records?

In HubSpot, you can automatically sync the lifecycle stage of companies to associated contacts. You can also automatically update the lifecycle stages of associated contacts and companies when a deal is created or closed as won. Follow the instructions below to manage these two settings.  

 

Companies

With the companies lifecycle stage sync setting enabled, any changes to the Lifecycle Stage value on a company record will be applied to all associated contact records. To manage the lifecycle stage sync setting for companies:

  • In your HubSpot account, click your photo or avatar in the top right-hand corner, then click Settings.
  • Click Contacts & Companies in the left sidebar menu. 
  • Under Companies, click the toggle the Lifecycle stage sync switch on or off. 

This setting will not set the lifecycle stage of contacts backwardsFor example, if there are two contacts associated with a company, one with a lifecycle stage of Marketing Qualified Lead and one with a lifecycle stage of Opportunity, and the company's lifecycle stage is set to Lead, the associated contacts' lifecycle stages will not be changed. However, if the company's lifecycle stage is set to Customer, the lifecycle stage of the two contacts will be changed to Customer as well.

Note for Salesforce Integrated users: with the Lifecycle stage sync setting turned on, any changes made to a contact's Lifecycle Stage by the Automatic Lifecycle Stage Transitions setting (Account Menu > Integrations > Salesforce Settings) will be applied to all contacts under the company in HubSpot. Contacts in Salesforce must still be attached to opportunities via the Contact Roles section, as Accounts associated to Opportunities will not be read by HubSpot.

Deals

With the deals lifecycle stage sync setting enabled, the lifecycle stages of associated contacts and companies will change when a deal is created or closed as won. When a deal is created, the lifecycle stage of associated contacts and companies will change to Opportunity. When a deal is won, the lifecycle stage of associated contacts and companies will change to Customer. To manage the lifecycle stage sync setting for deals:

  • In your HubSpot account, click your photo or avatar in the top right-hand corner, then click Settings.
  • Click Sales, then Deals in the left sidebar menu.
  • Click the toggle the Sync lifecycle stages to associated contacts and companies switch on or off.

This setting will not set the lifecycle stage of contacts backwardsFor example, a contact is associated with a deal and has a lifecycle stage of Customer. If a deal is created and associated with that contact, the lifecycle stage of the contact will not change to Opportunity. However, if the contact's lifecycle stage is set to Lead, and a deal is created and associated with it, the lifecycle stage of the contact will become Opportunity.
